Understanding the Outlook Client & Email Settings

First, let me start off by saying this entire subject confuses me....

We currently have the Outlook client installed for most of our users and have OUtlook Synchronization and Auto-Tagging turned on in their clients. We have been seeing a high number of sql queries on the db server that are directly related to the auto-tagging option in crm. We would like to turn this feature off, but wondering how to auto track responses to tracked emails then. 

1)      If auto-tagging is disabled in the users outlook client, how do replies to previously tracked emails get auto tracked? Is there a way to set this up between the different settings between the users settings, email router and client settings

 

2)      If auto-tagging is turned on in the users outlook client, how often does this run and is there a way to change the schedule for when it runs?

 

3)      Is there any changes between crm 2011 and crm 2013 in the outlook client for auto-tagging?

Any other information regarding this subject would be appreciated
