Tasks and Outlook

Hello,

Can someone explain to me how are tasks synchronized with Outlook.

Can this be done only by installing CRM for Outlook application and enabling server-side synchronization, can this be done without application? 

Also, can tasks be synchronized only with server-side synchronization or this can be done for example with CRM for Outlook application and email router?
