Elevated Permissions via Sharing?

Is it possible for a user to give themselves or someone else elevated security privileges via sharing if the Access Team Template is setup to do so?  For example, say a user's security roles has read permission to a support case but not write permission, but the Access Team Template gives write access.  If that user's security roles gives them permission to share the case, can they then share it with themselves to get write access or share with someone else and give them write access?  OR will the system prevent a user from sharing since they themselves don't have the permissions they are trying to share?

I've briefly tried searching the internet and came up empty.  The only way I've been told a user can grant elevated privileges is with a plug-in.
