Manage Product subscriptions

We are customizing our CRM to support the Sales cycle of types of products that are subscriptions which are charged per user on amonthly or annual basis. 

We have created pricelists for our products using the months as Units, for example 1 month unit and 1 year unit and when we create an Opportunity we choose the correct pricelist and in the opportunity products we input as quantity the number of users, so the total price is calculated. When the Opportunity is closed as Won, a quote is created and the customer is invoiced. The same quote/invoice may contain additional products that are not subscriptions (one-off charges)

For the Won Opportunities we would like to track when the subscription expires for each subscription-product and renew it if the customer pays again. We would also like to have a history of the customer subscriptions (old and current subscriptions). 

Is there an out-of-the-box mechanism to support this? I thought about Contracts, but we are not using the Service functionalities of CRM so this could be an overkill...

Any ideas?
