Updating the Accounts with an Account number

Hello Everyone:

We want to add an Account Number to all the Accounts.

Can we do this by import the Account Number to the Account?

or Do we have to export the all the Account (Company info) info then import the info back in.

 if so what happens to the opportunities, quotes, orders ie will that info remain in the Account.

Please any help would be great.
