Best practice Activity Lookup field to Account / Contact

Hi guys,

AFAIK there are the fields Regarding and Customers which can be linked to account/contact from an activity record.

What is the best practice, if I only want to use one field which is always linked to Account/Contact ?

Example:

If I create an Activity to an Opportunity, I want that the Regarding is set to Opportunity and Customers is set to the Account/Contact.

But if I create an Activity to a Contact, the Customers field is in default empty, instead the Regarding field is set with the Contact. Same thing if I directly create an Activity to an Account.

My question is, if you have the same requirement to have one field which always links an Activity to Account/Contact, would you also use the Customers field ? If yes, is it the standard way, that I have to create a workflow to fill the Customers field with Account/Contact if the Regarding is filled in with Customers/Contact ?
