Custom Auto-number Field

Hello,

I did create a custom field and a plugin to generate an auto-number but i am wondering if this plugin could be triggered by multiple user at the same time that it will give multiple record the same number

Can this happen?

If yes what ideas there is to avoid this, i have an idea to execute a fetch after the record is created and check if the number exists if so i will increment the number.
