CRM 2015 Very Slow Performance Compared to Older Versions

I'm probably stating the obvious, but does anyone else out there notice how as Microsoft "upgrades" versions of CRM, it just gets slower and slower? I'm talking from experience using CRM 4.0, 2011, 2013, and now 2015. I was using CRM 4.0 IFD (partner-hosted server) with Windows Server 2008 R2, a Xeon 2.27GHz dual-core processor and 4GB RAM; not an impressive rig by any means. This while accessing it over the internet. It was light speed in comparison with 2015. In fact, I can run both side-by-side (I have both CRM 2015 Online and CRM 2015 on-premise in a VM with 4-cores, 8GB RAM and Windows Server 2012) and it's no contest. I only wait a second or so for forms and views to load in CRM 4.0 versus 5-10 seconds in 2015 on average. The fastest load I've seen in 2015 is a Quick Form, which takes about 2-3 seconds to pull down from the top of the browser. I tried Edge and IE11 with similar results.

Oh, and I've tried the likes of "optimization" via posts like this:

I opened a case with Microsoft on this thinking our Online organization was broken. They told me there is no issue and that their expectation is that if forms aren't taking longer than 10 seconds to load, this is "expected behavior."

Since when did CRM stop becoming a database and start acting like an interactive website? You can have your fancier graphics and process flows; just give me back the speed. This has forced us to start looking at other options because it's hardly usable, especially in a customer service support role.
